CARRINGTON HOSPITAL HISTORY

The idea for a hospital in Carrington took shape on December 23, 1915, when the Carrington Hospital Association was chartered.  This association built the original hospital in 1916.  The opening day was November 22, 1916.

In 1941, the hospital was leased to the Presentation Sisters of the Diocese of Fargo.

By 1943, the need for more space was quite evident, but because of wartime conditions and spiraling costs, the building plans were delayed.  After many successful fund raising campaigns during 1945, 1947, and 1948, it became apparent that Federal aid would also be needed to build an adequate facility.  This was not secured until 1955.

The cornerstone for the building that now houses administration, pharmacy, physical therapy, home health and the conference rooms was laid on October 20, 1955 by Bishop Leo Dworschak, and the building was dedicated on June 22, 1956.

A 38 bed skilled nursing facility was built by the Presentation Sisters, and opening day was May 25, 1964.  This facility was called Holy Family Guest Home; it is now known as Carrington Health Center Long Term Care.

Articles of merger between the hospital and nursing home resulted in one corporation in July, 1980.  Also, at this time the Presentation Sisters joined the Catholic Health Corporation of Omaha.  This organization affiliated Carrington with other acute and long term care institutions in the United States.  From the original 18 hospital and seven long term care facilities, the Catholic Health Corporation grew to include 101 health care facilities located in 13 states.

As time progressed, it again became apparent more room was needed and the present five-million-dollar facility was finished in 1986.  Also, Holy Family Guest Home and Carrington Hospital became known as Carrington Health Center Acute and Long Term Care.

In 1989, the long term care facility was remodeled and enlarged and became a 40-bed facility, also adding a lounge, storage area and whirlpool bath area.

In 1993, the five area medical clinics housed at Foster County Medical Center, became a part of a rural health clinic and merged as one with Carrington Health Center.  All clinic employees became Carrington Health Center employees, and the clinic became a part of Carrington Health Center.  The facility then received federal designation as a certified Provider-based Rural Health Clinic in April, 1993.
